The assessment meeting is designed to establish an understanding of what your main concerns are and how it may be possible to work together to eradicate these concerns. It is important to be both honest and realistic about your hopes for the therapy in order to gain the best possible outcome for the agreed number of sessions.
Although it might feel reassuring to believe that you are working on an issue or problem, the act of seeing a counsellor or therapist once a week isn't in itself always enough to make a change in your life. What is often needed is a commitment outside of those meetings to pay attention to yourself; to learn more about who you are and how you respond to the circumstances in your life. This insight and knowledge can then be worked with in-session to further discover more about your problem and what you can do to help yourself best deal with your life as you are.
